A Frail Old Lady Named - Pang Sam Mui
Introducing
Pang Sam Mui, a wheelchair bounded old and frail lady who is selling
tissue paper for a living in expensive Singapore. Sometimes, she also
sells charity lucky draw tickets. Usually, but not everyday, she will
park herself near to the toilets of Simei MRT Station. Very reluctantly,
Sam Mui told my BB that actually she stays in Bedok estate (2 MRT stops
from Simei) with a relative. Why is she selling in Simei, wheeling
herself up and down, we do not dare to ask as she is quite the private
person.
Found out just recently that Sam Mui was infected with Polio at the age of 2 resulting in an inability to move due to muscle weakness. She also suffers from Spinal Tuberculosis. Because she contracted Polio while in her childhood, she's no longer contagious. Despite Sam Mui's torturous condition, she is always trying to be cheerful. Can tell that Sam Mui takes some sort of pride in what she's doing.
We always try to look for Sam Mui at her location. She sells 3 packets of tissue for S$1.00, but we will give her a S$2.00 note and tell her to keep the change. The first time my BB tried this with Sam Mui, she was quite pissed as my BB with a walking stick, looked like a handicap. She refused his money, but my BB was quite persuasive, talking and joking till she accepted the money. Nowadays, Sam Mui and us are like friends. We will help her buy food or drinks whenever she needs. Of course we refused all her payments. We can only help her as much as possible. Will continually buying tissues from her. Bought 8 charity lucky draw tickets from her just now.
